"Very good running shoes. Recommended." Review by

Although I've been running for a good few years (ahem, 'decades' as the other half has reminded me), I wouldn't describe myself as an expert. An ache in the leg suggested I needed new trainers, and a visit to Achilles Heel was a revelation; if you haven't been, they take a LOT of time establishing one's 'gait pattern' to determine the appropriate type of trainer and support. Narrowing the choice down between two brands I was unfamiliar with, I had the choice between the Ghost 9 and an Asics Gel. The later felt as though I was wearing trampolines on my feet - not unpleasant, just different - so I stuck with the traditional choice of "cushioning", and opted for the Brooks Ghost 9.

I've been running in them for the last 6 weeks, and I can only describe them as a joy. I've never needed - or knew I needed - cushioning before (I tended to use generic Nike and Hi-Tech). The first run felt as though I was running on air. Literally, they are that comfortable. I also found that they seriously affected my speed; my 1.5mile run time dropped from 10.40 to 10.02 (I'm 50, so its not too bad a time, just not the 7.15 I could achieve 30 years ago. And yes, I'm Armed Forces and that's a BFT runtime). My daily main run is 5 miles, and although I don't time these runs, I have noticed I'm finishing earlier and my legs are not so tired. After 6 weeks, and approx 250 miles of road/gravel path running, the trainers are still as comfortable as they were on Day 1, with no noticeable compression in the sole or inner. They have also been used for circuit/boxercise training, and work well in those environments. The sole gives a good grip on wet or dry pavements, gravel paths along the canals, and to a lesser degree cobblestones. The upper and seams are reasonably water-resistant; I've yet to get wet feet running in the rain, although I do avoid puddles where possible. Although mainly down to 'fit', no problems with the shoe being overly tight across the upper foot or "lace dig" into the top of the foot.

My only minor niggle is the supplied laces. These are slightly elasticated, and even when new are perhaps 6" too long, leaving long trailing ends when tied. As the lace stretches over time, this will worsen. It's a minor point, and something Brooks could easily address. Typically, the price has dropped since I bought my pair :(

Overall? More than happy with the trainers, they are comfortable, addresses my [unknown!] gait problem, and have improved my run times as well as negating the impact-issues that led to leg aches. I'd unreservedly recommend them to anyone looking for a new running shoe. 5 stars, as the niggle re laces is just that, and may just be personal preference. And I'm sure I'll be needing to replace the laces before the shoe in any case!

I do wonder what the Asics would have been like to run in, though. Trampolines for the feet, or 'Spring Heeled Jack'...
